Bible Study 3
Why Is There Sin & Suffering?
Who was the first sinner?
"He that commiteth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth
from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested,
that he might destroy the works of the devil."
1 John 3:8
How did the devil (Satan) come to this
world?
"And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall
from heaven."
Luke 10:18
What kind of being was Satan?
"Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have
set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast
walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast
perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till
iniquity was found in thee."
Ezekiel 28:14, 15
Note: The "cherub that covereth" is
a description of the angel that stood next to the throne of God
in heaven (Psalm 80:1). This angel was created perfect and was
the most honored of all created beings, until he made himself
into a devil by trying to set his own will above the will of
God.
What contributed to Satan's fall and rebellion
in heaven?
"Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast
corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast
thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may
behold thee."
Ezekiel 28:17
What was Lucifer's ambition?
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also
upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like
the most High."
Isaiah 14:12-14
Note: Lucifer was Satan's name before his fall.
What happened in heaven after Satan rebelled?
"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought
against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels. And
prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the
Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast
out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
Revelation 12:7-9
To whom did Satan turn with deception after
he was expelled from heaven?
"Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field
which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea,
hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit
of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which
is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat
of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent
said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know
that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened,
and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the
woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant
to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took
of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband
with her; and he did eat."
Genesis 3:1-6
What territory does Satan now claim as
a result of Man's fall?
"And the devil, taking him up into a high mountain, showed
unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And
the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and
the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever
I will I give it."
Luke 4:5, 6
How does Satan exercise tyranny over mankind?
"So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and
smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his
crown."
Job 2:7
"And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham,
whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed
?"
Luke 13:16
Why is Satan increasing his efforts to
ruin mankind?
"And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come
salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the
power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast
down, which accused them before our God day and night."
"Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them.
Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil
is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth
that he hath but a short time."
Revelation 12:10, 12
How will God ultimately destroy the devil?
"By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the
midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore
I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I
will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones
of fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou
hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will
cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they
may behold thee. Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude
of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffic; therefore
will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour
thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight
of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the
people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and
never shalt thou be any more."
Ezekiel 28:16-19
